Steak Around The World at Smith Butcher and Grill Room

My son has just moved into his teens, and for us (for me especially), it means the end of kiddie parties for him!

And so last Monday, we celebrated his 13th birthday differently — it is a milestone, anyway! 🙂 And since he wanted steak, we took the family to Smith Butcher and Grill Room for a proper steak feast!

This restaurant practices nose-to-tail butchery, cookery and specializes in steaks from all over the world.

The interiors are “urban industrial chic” — quite stylish and modern, yet still very cozy.

One interesting thing about Smith Butcher and Grill Room is that it has its own butchery room. That’s it at the back of the photo. You can see for yourself the cutting, preparing and dry aging of the meat here.

You can see the different kinds of meat displayed in its fresh and raw form.

It’s not all steak and meat here however… These lovely starters set the celebratory mood for us.

Big eye tuna poke, wasabi, calamansi, avocado, and caviar. I really enjoyed this as it was light, healthy and refreshing!
Warm spinach, wild mesclun, pear and blue cheese salad, with pickled beets and candied pili nuts
Warm spinach, wild mesclun, pear and blue cheese salad, with pickled beets and candied pili nuts. A very filling and hearty salad, I must say!
Double reduction French onion soup with emmental croute
Double reduction French onion soup with Emmental croute. The warm soup filled with the flavor of sweet onions and melted cheese… the perfect way to whet our appetites!
Prime beef carpaccio and black truffles (with manchego cheese!)
Prime beef carpaccio and black truffles with manchego cheese. It had everything I wanted in an appetizer (beef, truffles and cheese). I wouldn’t mind going back just for this!
Chargrilled Norwegian King Salmon, with citrus glaze, sauteed spinach, and preserved lemon risotto
Chargrilled Norwegian King Salmon, with citrus glaze, sauteed spinach, and preserved lemon risotto. I’ve always loved salmon and this didn’t disappoint. It was cooked just right!

Spaghetti Carbonara, an off-the menu, special request by no less than my little 5 year old girl!

And then for the main event.

But first, we were asked to choose our kind of steak knife!

And then this. This is what I call Smith Butcher and Grill Room’s Around The World Steak! The chef chose a big platter for us and filled it with different kinds of steak from all over the world.

From left to right: 45-day dry-aged U.S. Beef Ribeye, Japanese Matsusaka, French Tenderloin, Irish Sirloin, and U.S. Snake River Farm Wagyu.

My two favorites? The well-marbled Japanese Matsusaka and Ribeye, of course. It was cooked medium rare to medium, seasoned well and had the right amount of fat and tenderness!

Side dishes : caramelized onion, creamed spinach, steak rice and french fries
Smith Butcher Sauces
Steak sauce : Truffle, Pinot Noir, Peppercorn, Bernaise, Blue Cheese. Condiments : Dijon Mustard, Horseradish, English Mustard.

A great way to end our hearty, steak dinner : cheeses from around the world too!

And because our birthday boy loves a good ol’ plain cheesecake, he gets this as a little surprise treat from the staff!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY to my not so little big boy! I still can’t believe I now have a teenager…!
